glance

stars deck the moon
and silver fingers touch my eyes
a pane shimmers on the edge of sleep
sounds of crickets journey inwards
there are no shadows
only folds of moonlight
settling on the night
silver fingers touch my heart
and lift it like a red star to the moon
where it pulses without rhythm to eternity
a naked eye can see
no drop falls on this
hallowed night

Lilacs in Winter

A candle in the window
it flickers through the pane
the clustered lilacs mingle
I’m coming home again

The air is crisp yet gentle
the path has broken stones
there is a scent of lilacs,
though winter shows its bones

Birds are quiet, hunger falls
and still the blanket swaddles
in the distance no one calls
and yet I know to follow

Bleeding are the huddled berries:
open hands they holler
for the flowing, rambling heart
to lay its mercy collar

Stories come and loved ones go
and sweetness takes a toll,
but lilacs in the winter
I know I’m coming home
